"Obstacles Don't Block the Path, They Are the Path"
This boulder was blocking my path through the slot canyon, but I was determined to go on! First, I slid my tripod and backpack through the little opening at the bottom right and then I crawled and squeezed my way through. I'm just glad I was there AFTER the boulder fell.

"Dam Nice Sunrise"
I scouted this location the night before after the sun had set and couldn't see anything in front of me, except for the lights from the dam. The next morning I woke up well before sunrise and hustled back to the overlook. I was able to climb over some railings (shhh!) and place my tripod on the edge of the cliff walls for this exposure. I wanted to feel the swirls of the powerful river below so I did a three-second exposure for this composition.

"The Teepees"
Hiking back from an off-trail adventure I saw these enormous clouds approaching in the distance. I began to run as fast as I could, backpack on and tripod in hand as I scrambled past my car, across the road, and into the open desert. Sticks down, camera up, red filter on, meter and click! There's no better high than running down and catching a fleeting moment.

"Cly Butte"
This photograph was taken about an hour after my primary field camera broke in a pop up wind and snow storm. I quickly swapped all of the lenses to my studio camera's lens boards and I was back up and running within thirty minutes. Afterwards, the sky was full of billowing clouds that I was chasing in the wind for the rest of the day!

"Wavy Walls"
There's something awe inspiring about seeing thousands of years of erosion turn into such beautiful forms of art. I think I could have blindly placed my camera down in this slot canyon and still come out of there with an interesting image.
Time is a powerful thing.

"Winding Wash"
Easily my favorite place in the USA is the expanse of the Painted Desert where you can see the layers of time in the rolling mountains. This morning was full of fog and I got really lucky that the fog was just breaking when I was here for this composition.

"Montezuma's Castle"
I sat and watched for the sun to move across this cliff dwelling for several hours before exposing this negative. During my time waiting with my 4x5" field camera set up, I think I became as much of an attraction to tourists viewing this ancient site as the dwelling itself!

"Broken Ladder"
There was no lack of inspiration in the Taos Pueblos with the people, the buildings and the history you could sense as you walked around. It's no wonder why other great artists such as Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe and Paul Strand found such a calling to this area!

"Staircase to the Moon"
I was composing a photo that mirrored this one the evening prior and as I loaded my film into the camera, I turned and watched the sun wink at me as it lowered behind the mountains taking away the day's last light. The next morning I knew I wanted to recreate the missed photograph on the other side of the pueblo with the rising sunlight. What a wonderful surprise to me as I walk up and notice the moon setting in the sky right behind my composition. I waited just a few minutes for the moon to drop into frame, then click!

"Lee Street Overpass"
I've driven through this overpass dozens of times on my way to some friends' home and I've always envisioned this photograph. Finally, with the quarantine I was able to drive over and create the photograph without any cars or life in the foreground except for the flowers growing out of the concrete.
